Great job to 403 and 404 for doing a great job with it. The rest of 4th grade came to watch and it helped them see the plays that their peers were working on. Due to time constraints, 401 and 402 will have their presentations recorded after the break. Check below for the videos of their showcase. Please note that the videos are not publicly visible. Their class has spoken, and the winning play for their class is Get Animated written by the trio. The story is quirky, fun, and imaginative. It is about a boy who gets bullied in school, finds a sketchbook from his grandfather in the attic. He uses it for class, but he is in for a total surprise as this sketchbook is no ordinary one! Without giving too much of the story away, stay tuned for updates on how 8T1 goes through the journey of producing the play.
Exciting new for 8T2 as we will be welcoming a theater artist from Lincoln Center will be working on Devised Theater with them. Devised Theater is my absolute favorite to creating a production since everyone works together as an ensemble and get to contribute ideas to making the performance. Before the teaching artist gets here, we will be exercising our teamwork muscles! Stay tuned for updates on their process!

3rd Grade3rd graders started rehearsing for their puppet show. They've read through the play first, and learned all about character voice. Since the audience won't see their faces and body, the voice of the actors in puppet shows are very important! Since theater is new for many students in 3rd grade, they learned many new things in this part of the process from what scripts and lines are, to the rehearsal process. They are extremely excited for their upcoming showcase on the 19th! Here you can see that they are learning to set rehearsal goals for themselves for each practice. 4th Grade4th graders finished reading their Shakespeare play earlier this month, and have learned some basic acting and directing skills as well. Everyone in the classes will be actors and are responsible for knowing their line cues, entrances, exits and blocking. They'll showcase this knowledge next month so stay tuned! 4th grade also went on a trip this month to see The Frog Prince at Queensborough Performing Arts Center. Prior to Shakespeare, students learned about the plays and stories that were popular centuries ago, and how they are still popular today. The Frog Prince is a classic from the 1800s and is now still popular today so it's a great example for the students to see how stories like this one and Shakespeare can be timeless. 7th Grade7th graders finished reading Wiley and the Hairy Man and have been split into their directing and acting groups. We examined the role of the Chorus in the play. They learned about the parts of the stage, and how to design and record blocking. Each group has a director leader who will design the blocking for the characters. It will be exciting to see what they come up with. Especially when they have to create the blocking for the Chorus! Look forward to their showcase next month! 8th Grade8th graders worked hard this month writing the rest of the play! Students turned in the scenes for their plays and the creative details in the stories are amazing! This month, students wrote:

The classes voted for their Shakespeare play. Check below! 401 - Romeo and Juliet 402 - A Midsummer Night's Dream 403 - Macbeth 404 - Hamlet 7th Grade7th Graders started analyzing the play they voted - Wiley and the Hairy Man. They learned about all the elements that make up the World of the Play, and analyzed the interesting characters in the play. In addition, 7th graders explored the character's voice, centers and gestures - building their acting tools! Check the pictures below for some of the students' work! 8th Grade8th graders brainstormed themes and ideas for their plays, learned all about plot, outlined their play and at the end of the month even started writing their plays! Their ideas are very creative, action packed, intense, and even out of this world (literally)! Without giving too much away, stay tuned as they continue to expand their script!
3rd & 4th Grade3rd and 4th grade students joined the rest of the school in their welcome back to school this month! For the 3rd graders, this is their first time having a consistent theater arts course. They're in for a new and exciting journey this year! 4th graders are enrolled in theater for half the year, so our time together is precious, and each moment will be an exciting one. In theater this month, students are learning the rules and routines for theater class while building their teamwork. It has only been a few classes, but the improvement in their teamwork is astonishing! 7th & 8th Grade7th & 8th grade students return to PS/IS30 this year with additional responsibilities as models for the lower grades! In theater, 7th and 8th graders are enrolled in Theater I and II respectively. Like the 4th graders, 7th grade will only have theater for half a year so our precious time will be spent building lots of theater skills! Thank you to the 8th graders who have chosen to be in theater class for the year. As model theater students, each of the 8th grade classes will essentially function as a production company. Get ready to take responsibility for your job in the production company!
