The art program at P.S./I.S. 30 gives students an excellent opportunity to explore the world in which they live through the lens of the arts. Students learn how to work with a variety of art media such as drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture as well as learning how to apply the art-making skills they acquire to express ideas about their lives and the world at large.
The program provides all students a chance to engage in the arts while offering opportunities for those students who are interested in continuing their education in one of New York City's Specialized Art High Schools to create work for their portfolio. |
Through my art curriculum, students gain confidence and proficiency in working with a range of different art mediums from drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture to collage. I strive to provide experiences for my students where they can discover that art materials can be used to express their ideas, thoughts and emotions as well as support and deepen their understanding of the content they are introduced to in their subject areas classes. Art projects will also broaden students' knowledge of art as they are introduced to different artists and time periods through art history. Everyday in the art room students sharpen their visual art literacy skills as they develop art vocabulary and learn to describe, interpret and respond to ideas and experiences about art.
Most importantly, through my art curriculum students will use art to build their self-esteem and confidence in themselves as artists and community members. Through participating in a range of art making experiences students will learn that art could inspire change, hope and evoke emotion in a way that words rarely do. At the end of each school year, K-2 students use their art making skills to participate in an arts fundraiser to support a charity of their choosing. Through this experience, I hope that my students learn that their artistic talents and creativity can bring positive changes to the school and surrounding community and that they can leave a positive impact in the world as artists. |
